The Rules
 

1.  The competition is open to all. (Entries were formerly restricted to include only Connecticut residents.) All entries must be original and previously unpublished.

2.  Entries must be postmarked by December 18, 2009.

3. The entry fee is $10.00 per short story or personal essay or children's story and $10.00 for up to 3 poems. You may submit as many entries as you like. Each entry (e.g., each poem, each short story, each essay, each children's story) must be accompanied by a separate entry form.  You may send one check for all entries.

4.  Manuscripts must conform to the following requirements: entries that do not conform will be disqualified:

  • All manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced on one side of  8 1/2  x 11 paper. Submit FOUR copies of each manuscript.  (Staple multi-page manuscripts separately if necessary.)

  • Your name or any other identifying information must NOT appear on the manuscript itself. Instead, specify the title of your work in the space provided on the entry form. (For untitled poetry, specify the first line on the entry form.)

  • The first page of each submission must include the title of the work; also, indicate the word count (line count for poetry) in the upper right corner of the first page.

  • Manuscript length/word count:
         Poetry - 30 lines maximum
         Short Story - 2,000 words maximum
         Personal Essay - 1,500 words maximum
         Children's Story - 2,000 words maximum with NO Illustrations,
         Drawings or Graphics.

5.  Manuscripts will not be returned. If you would like confirmation that yuor entry has been received, use the Confirmation Delivery option from the Post Office (not Registered mail); or include your email address on the entry form.

6.  Winners will be notified personally and publicly announced at the march 2010 CAPA monthly meeting. If you have not been contacted by March 1, 2010, you may assume that your entry is not a finalist and may be marketed elsewhere. Please check our website by the end of October to view the winning entries.

7.  Winning entries will be published in a special issue of The Authority, CAPA's monthly newsletter.

8.  Officers of CAPA Board of Directors, members of the Competition committee, and Competition judges are not eligible to enter the Competition.

Annual Writing Competition
2009-2010

Winners

The Connecticut Authors and Publishers 2009-2010 Jerry Labriola/Brian Jud Annual Writing Competition Awards were announced at the Association’s Annual Dinner on March 20, 2010. The contest ran from September until December 19th. The submissions were judged by a panel that included teachers, writing professionals and experts in the publishing industry. The winners were notified on March 1, 2010 and are pictured above.

The first place in Children’s Stories was Barbara Klein for her story My Grandma And Me and second place went to Jim Norton for When The Circus Came To Town.

In the field of Essays, the first place winner was Julie Baker for Overturned and the second place went to Amy Soscia Paloski for Equipped For Life.

For Poetry, the winners were Serena Sinclair for her sonnet That Look Is Clear And Cold My Friend and second place went to Jim Norton for The Writer.

Lastly, under the classification of Short Stories, the winner of first place was Louis Arthur Norton for his story Shoal Island. Second place went to Tido H. Holtkamp for The Coward.

The cash prizes were presented to the winners by CAPA president, Dan Uitti, during the 16th Annual CAPA Anniversary Party so that the members could celebrate the winner’s achievements. The winners are pictured above receiving their awards with president Dan Uitti. The stories, poems and essays are attached to this month’s issue and are also available on the website www.aboutcapa.com.
